What is the importance of dental cleanings?

Dental cleanings play a crucial role in maintaining your gum health. They keep the foundation and structure that support your teeth healthy and strong, prevent bone loss, gingivitis, and pain, contributing overall to your body's health. Hence, regular dental cleanings with your dentist and hygienist are extremely important.

How often should I have a dental cleaning?

The frequency of dental cleaning depends on your personal dental condition. Your hygienist will assess your teeth and gums and measure your bone with a probe. This evaluation will determine the interval for your cleanings, typically every three, four, or six months.

Do dental cleanings hurt?

Generally, dental cleanings do not hurt. However, some people may have more sensitive gums and teeth. In such cases, we apply a topical gel to the gums, which usually helps the patient not feel any pain during the cleaning.

How long should a typical dental cleaning take?

A typical dental cleaning usually does not exceed an hour. Sometimes it might take less time, but typically it does not go over an hour.

What happens during a dental cleaning?

During a dental cleaning, every surface of the tooth is cleaned, from the lip side to the tongue side, and the surfaces in between the teeth. Once the cleaning is complete, the teeth are polished, the mouth is rinsed, and the teeth are flossed.

Are dental hygienists able to remove all tartar before their dental cleaning?

Yes, a hygienist is capable of removing all the tartar off your teeth. In some cases, if the tartar is under your gums and a deeper cleaning is required, we might need to use an instrument or an ultrasonic cleaner.

Can dental cleaning damage your teeth?

A dental cleaning should not damage your teeth. On the contrary, it will make your teeth healthier and more attractive.

How do I protect my teeth after a cleaning?

Sometimes, you may experience sensitivity after a teeth cleaning. In such cases, we can apply fluoride to strengthen the area and reduce sensitivity. If necessary, we can also apply a desensitizer to the teeth if they are sensitive after the cleaning.

How can I schedule a dental cleaning?

If you need a dental cleaning, you can simply call your dentist and request a cleaning. You will then be scheduled with the hygienist for a teeth cleaning. If you're a new patient, your dental needs will be assessed to determine the type of cleaning you need.
